SANTA
VENERINA
Santa
Venerina is a city of about 7,700 inhabitants at some 340 m a.s.l.
Its economy is mostly based on agriculture, with major outputs of
wine-grapes, fruit, citrus fruits and walnuts. Its name derives
from Acireale’s patron saint Venera.
Inhabited
since the antiquity, as show ruins of thermal baths and an ancient
oratory of Roman-Byzantin origin, the area of what is now Santa
Venerina was included in the territory of the neighboring Acireale
as far as 1934, when it became an autonomous municipality.
The
Mother Church dedicated to Santa Venera, with interesting paintings
by Alessando (1720-1793) and Pietro Paolo (1697-1760) Vasta, is
the best attraction of this tiny town.
